Christmas is one of the largest events in the world. It is observed annually on the 25th of December, especially among the Christians who regard it as the day of birth of Jesus (Prophet who was Isa according to Islam). Relying on your senses the whole day you see that everywhere during this season here are Christmas trees, lights, gifts, and happy gatherings. But this raises a typical question; Can Muslims celebrate Christmas?
It is not an easy answer and could differ according to one’s belief, the culture and comprehension of Islam. Let us dedicate a close look on this subject to get an insight into what Muslims believe and what Islam says about holidays such as Christmas.
What Is Christmas About?
Christmas is a celebration to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians worship Jesus as the son of God and remember his birth through prayers, church services, songs etc with family. To others, Christmas is more of culture and tradition things like exchanging gifts, decorating the trees, etc. spend time with family.
Even those who do not believe in religion may celebrate Christmas as an occasion of joy, giving and kindness.
Who Is Jesus in Islam?
Muslims are very reverential of Jesus (known as Isa in Arabic). He is among the most significant prophets of Islam. The Qur’an says he was miraculously conceived to Maryam (Mary) and preached the message of worship of one God.
But according’t Islam Jesus is not the son of god or a part of god. Muslims believe that he was a servant and prophet of Allah, as are other prophets, including Muhammad (peace be upon him), Moses and Abraham. So while Muslims love (and even call him master and prophet) and honor Jesus, they do not accept the Christian doctrine of his divinity.
What Does Islam Say About Celebrating Religious Holidays?
Islam has two main religious holidays:
-
Eid al-Fitr (after Ramadan)
-
Eid al-Adha (during the Hajj season)
These are special days for Muslims, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) clearly said that these two are the only religious festivals for Muslims.
Some Islamic scholars say that joining in celebrations of other religions—like Christmas—goes against Islamic teachings. They say that even if a Muslim does not believe Jesus is the Son of God, celebrating Christmas may seem like agreeing with that belief. They want Muslims to protect their faith and avoid copying religious festivals from other religions.
Can Muslims Join Christmas Just for Fun or Culture?
This is where opinions start to differ. Some Muslims live in Western countries where Christmas is part of the culture. They may see Christmas as more of a family event than a religious one. They might:
-
Join office or school parties
-
Exchange simple gifts
-
Eat dinner with friends or neighbors
They believe that as long as they don’t take part in the religious side of Christmas (like going to church or singing religious songs), it’s okay to show kindness and respect to others.
These Muslims also believe Islam teaches respect for neighbors and kindness to people of all religions. They may say "Merry Christmas" as a polite way to share good wishes, without meaning anything religious.
Why Some Muslims Avoid Christmas Entirely
Other Muslims are more careful and avoid all Christmas events. Their reasons include:
-
Protecting Islamic beliefs: They don’t want to be part of anything that may go against their faith.
-
Avoiding imitation: Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Some take this to mean Muslims should not copy non-Islamic religious celebrations.
-
Teaching kids the difference: Parents may avoid Christmas to help their children understand Islamic identity and values.
How Can Muslims Show Kindness Without Celebrating?
Islam encourages Muslims to be kind, friendly, and respectful to others—even if they follow a different religion. So, Muslims can still be warm and polite during Christmas season without celebrating it.
Here are some ways:
-
Be a good neighbor and share food or gifts without any religious symbols
-
Say kind words like “Happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”
-
Be respectful when others talk about their celebrations
-
Explain kindly and clearly why you don’t celebrate
Conclusion: Can Muslims Celebrate Christmas?
So, can Muslims celebrate Christmas? The answer depends on what "celebrate" means and how each person understands their faith. Here is a simple breakdown:
-
Religious Christmas (church services, believing Jesus is God): Not allowed in Islam.
-
Cultural Christmas (family dinners, gift-giving without religious meaning): Disagreed upon—some scholars allow it with conditions, while others strongly advise against it.
-
Showing kindness and respect: Always encouraged in Islam.
Each Muslim should think carefully, ask trusted scholars, and follow what they believe is right according to Islam.
