Macau authorities ask casinos to stop forcing employees to take unpaid leave

The government has officially notified casinos that it will not stop an anti-corruption crackdown that has scared VIPs and high-return gamblers from mainland China to visit Macau casinos.

Casino authorities have had to reduce costs and limit overhead to deal with the crisis. According to recent reports, many casinos in Macau are forcing their employees to use unpaid leave. The Chinese New Year (CNY) is the country's biggest festival held every February. Casino employees who applied for leave to enjoy CNY were contacted and asked for an extension of the leave and said they would not be compensated.

Win Macau, one of the largest and most popular casinos in Macau, is said to have texted employees asking for an extension of their vacation. Win Macau has not followed this policy for the past five years and suddenly extended furloughs to casino employees, raising concerns about job security.

Lionel Leong Vai Tac, Macau's Minister of Economy and Finance, said in a statement, "We call on game operators to provide more vocational training and not force employees to take unpaid leave. We want casino operators to pay employees salaries during their training because they can increase upward mobility.

There are 25,000 casino dealers in Macau, all of whom are Macau residents. The government promised to investigate the matter and ordered casinos not to violate employment policies.
