Global agriculture is facing disarray on multiple fronts. As the world's population grows, increasing agricultural productivity is necessary: projections suggest that it will grow by 12% by 2030. 0.23 But land supply constraints may tighten food supplies: 20 to 40 percent of the land has been degraded, and weather volatility has increased. Increasing attention to organic farming and sustainability will require more efficient use of fertilizers and bio-friendly crop protection chemical.

Mexico is one of the world's top 15 food producers. 25 However, the country relies heavily on imports for its agricultural chemical needs, particularly fertilizers, which account for more than 40 percent of total demand. Mexico is well placed to revitalize its fertilizer industry, serve important agricultural states such as Michoacan, and develop bio-crop protection products through tech services.

In addition to the above trends, electrification, the growth of bio-feeds, demand restructuring in developing regions, and other trends may have a potentially beneficial impact on Mexico's chemical industry.

Annex 7 summarizes the economic impact of these four approaches on the Mexican chemical industry. We ranked the paths according to the amount of investment required.
