It has been said that Elden Ring, much like Bloodborne, initially consisted of two DLC packs in addition to a season pass before it was merged into Shadow of the Erdtree.  The DLC for Elden Ring was finally revealed earlier this year, but a prominent leaker named Lance McDonald claims that the original plan was to launch two separate DLC packs in addition to a season pass for the game.  These concepts eventually became incorporated into what is now known as Shadow of the Erdtree.  McDonald stated in his Discord server that the Elden ring was supposed to launch with a season pass that included two downloadable content packs.  Everything went exactly as planned.

No idea when it was exactly cancelled; it just didn't happen, and then the colosseums appeared out of nowhere for no cost.  They were lacking a significant amount of content.  Lance compares it to Bloodborne, which was originally going to release two separate DLC packs before deciding to combine them into The Old Hunters.  At the time, Masaaki Yamagiwa, the producer for Bloodborne at Sony Japan, stated that the company had initially planned to do two sets of downloadable content for the game.  It was decided that we would only need one set in order to be able to do more with it and provide players with a greater overall volume to play with.

They went on to say that there were no plans for any additional downloadable content, so it's possible that Elden Ring will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors in that all of the planned expansions will be combined into a single paid pack before the development team moves on to the next major game.

Dark Souls 3, which had two different expansion packs, was released by FromSoftware in the time slot between Bloodborne and Elden Ring.  These weren't combined, but rather marketed as two distinct adventures; the first took us to a Painted World, and the second brought us to The Ringed City.  This is where we were finally able to discover what had become of the Furtive Pygmy and where we witnessed firsthand the effects of Gwyn's cruel rule.  Both of the DLC packs were sold separately, but they were interconnected and told the same overarching story.  If you only played Ashes of Ariandel or The Ringed City, you would probably spend a lot of time trying to figure out what you missed and how to get it back.
