Tottenham's Postecoglou criticized for lackluster finishing after draw despite 71% possession

Tottenham manager Anzhi Postecoglou was bitter about his side's lackluster finishing in the opening game of the English Premier League (EPL) season after they were held to a 1-1 draw despite enjoying 71 percent of the ball possession.

Tottenham drew 1-1 away to promoted Leicester City in the first leg of the 2024-2025 EPL at the King Power Stadium in Leicester, England, on Tuesday (Sept. 20).

The Foxes took the lead in the 29th minute through Pedro Foro, but Jamie Vardy equalized 12 minutes into the second half.

Tottenham dominated the first half, but the momentum shifted to Leicester early and often in the second half, resulting in a draw.

Spurs had 71% of the ball on the day. In addition to possession, they dominated every other statistical measure, including shots on goal 15-7, shots on target 7-3, corners 13-2, and passes 666-268.

Postecoglou, who has emphasized his signature style of “attacking football” since taking over the reins ahead of last season, was disappointed that the attacking attempts didn't translate into more goals.

“It's a very disappointing result,” Postecoglou said in his post-match press conference, according to Football England. We were very dominant in the first half but we were really 'wasteful' with our finishing at the back,” he said.

“We dominated them, especially in the first 15-20 minutes of the game, but (the attack) was wasteful,” he said, adding, ”We lacked a little bit of sharpness in the attacking areas, which is just disappointing.”

“We kept making bad decisions and lacked composure. Our football didn't get the reward it deserved,” he added.

Under Postecoglou, Tottenham scored 74 goals in 38 games last season. That's seventh best out of 20 teams, but they scored the fewest goals of any team in the top seven last season.

They were 22 goals behind champions Manchester City (96).

To bolster their offense, Spurs added striker Dominic Solanke, who exploded for 19 goals for Bournemouth last season.

Solanke, who was named the starting striker from the first game of the league, played the full game but did not find the back of the net.

“Solanke did well,” said Postecoglou. He worked hard for the team,” Postecoglou said, adding, ”He had a couple of chances but he will be disappointed with himself (for not scoring).”

“Overall, everyone was good, but in the end it doesn't mean anything if the performance doesn't translate into results,” he said, adding, ”We had similar problems last year. If the team wants to step up and close the gap with the top teams, they need to improve.”

South Korean soccer icon and Tottenham captain Son Heung-min started on the left wing and played until two minutes of second-half stoppage time before being substituted for Heucharlison.

He didn't register a goal or an assist and had one shot on goal. No shots on target.

Regarding midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who was stretchered off after suffering a head injury during a contested corner in the 26th minute, Postecoglou said, “I don't have much information right now. But he seems to be okay in the sense that he got up and communicated,” he said.

“What is clear is that the injury is to the head. We will leave it to the medical team.”
